Common Mistakes
- Ignoring equipment grounding conductor: Ground wires count toward conduit fill even though they're not current-carrying for derating.
- Not derating for fill over 30%: When more than 3 conductors are in a raceway, ampacity must be derated per NEC 310.15(B)(3)(a).
- Using 53% fill for multiple wires: The 53% rule is for 1 wire only. Two wires: 31%. Three or more: 40%.

How many wires can I put in a ½" EMT?
Up to 12 × 14 AWG THWN, 9 × 12 AWG, 7 × 10 AWG, 4 × 8 AWG, or 3 × 6 AWG. These limits are for 3+ conductors at 40% fill. For fewer conductors, the limits differ: 2 wires = 31% fill, 1 wire = 53%.
What is the 40% rule for conduit?
NEC Chapter 9, Table 1 limits conduit fill to 40% of the internal area when 3 or more conductors are installed. This prevents overheating and allows wires to be pulled without damage. 1 wire: 53%. 2 wires: 31%. 3+ wires: 40%.
Do ground wires count for conduit fill?
Yes. Equipment grounding conductors count toward conduit fill just like any other wire. They do NOT count for ampacity derating (NEC 310.15(B)(3)(a) only counts current-carrying conductors), but they take up physical space in the conduit.
Can I mix wire sizes in conduit?
Yes. Calculate fill using the total area of all wires combined. Add the area of each wire (from NEC Table 5) and verify the total doesn't exceed 40% of the conduit area (for 3+ wires). Mixing sizes is common when running different circuits in one conduit.
What's the difference between EMT and PVC conduit fill?
EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing) has a larger internal area than PVC Schedule 40 of the same trade size, so it can hold more wires. For example, ½" EMT holds 12 × 14 AWG while ½" PVC holds only 10. Use NEC Annex C tables for the specific conduit type.
