Capacitor Code Calculator

Decode 3-digit SMD capacitor codes to pF, nF, μF

Input Parameters

Enter a 3-digit code (e.g. 104). Also supports R notation (e.g. 4R7).

About This Calculator

  • 3-digit code: First 2 digits × 10^(3rd digit) pF
  • Example: 104 = 10 × 10⁴ = 100,000 pF = 100 nF = 0.1 μF
  • R notation: 4R7 = 4.7 μF

How this capacitor code calculator works

The 3-digit capacitor code system uses the first two digits as significant figures and the third digit as a multiplier (power of 10). The result is always in picofarads (pF).

Common capacitor codes

100=10pF, 101=100pF, 102=1nF, 103=10nF, 104=100nF(0.1μF), 105=1μF, 222=2.2nF, 223=22nF, 224=220nF, 225=2.2μF, 473=47nF, 474=470nF.

FAQ

What does 104 mean?

10 × 10⁴ = 100,000 pF = 100 nF = 0.1 μF. It's the most common decoupling capacitor value.

What about codes with third digit 8 or 9?

8 means ×0.01, 9 means ×0.1. So 108=0.1pF, 229=2.2pF. Used for very small values.

What does the letter after the code mean?

It's the tolerance: J=±5%, K=±10%, M=±20%. 104K = 100nF ±10%.
