About This Calculator

This water heater expansion tank calculator determines the required thermal expansion tank size based on ASHRAE standards:

  • Calculates water thermal expansion from inlet to outlet temperature
  • Accounts for supply pressure and T&P valve settings
  • Computes acceptance factor based on pressure ratio
  • Provides recommended tank size with safety margin
  • Includes common water heater to expansion tank size reference

Results are for preliminary sizing only. Final selection should comply with local plumbing codes and be verified by a qualified plumber.

How This Expansion Tank Calculator Works

When water is heated in a closed plumbing system, it expands in volume. Without an expansion tank, this extra volume causes pressure to rise, potentially triggering the T&P relief valve or damaging pipes and fixtures. This calculator determines the correct expansion tank size to safely absorb the thermal expansion.

Understanding Thermal Expansion

  • Water heated from 10°C to 60°C expands by approximately 1.7%
  • A 50-gallon (189 L) water heater produces about 3.2 L of expanded water
  • Closed systems require expansion tanks; open systems do not
  • The acceptance factor determines how much of the tank volume is usable

FAQ

Do I need an expansion tank?

If your home has a closed plumbing system (check valve, PRV, or backflow preventer), an expansion tank is required by most plumbing codes to prevent excessive pressure buildup.

How long does an expansion tank last?

Most expansion tanks last 5–10 years. The internal bladder can fail over time. Check by tapping the tank — a hollow sound means it is working; a dull thud suggests the bladder has failed and the tank needs replacement.

Can I install the expansion tank myself?

Yes, if you have basic plumbing skills. The tank connects to the cold water line using a T-fitting near the water heater. However, many jurisdictions require a licensed plumber for any modifications to the plumbing system.
